As the sun dips below the horizon, Glamis Sand Dunes transforms from a sunlit expanse into a mystical nighttime arena. For those who love the thrill of off-roading under the stars, Glamis offers an unforgettable experience. Our group has a special arrangement; while some adults take turns watching the kids back at camp, others venture out for adrenaline-fueled rides to Oldsmobile Hill. Here’s how we make the most of our nocturnal adventures.
Night Riding at Glamis
Preparation and Safety: Ensuring that all vehicles are equipped with adequate lighting is paramount for a safe and fun night ride. We outfit our rides with LED bars or high-powered spotlights (Whips), crucial for both navigating and visibility. Each vehicle is checked thoroughly before heading out—fuel, tires, and engines must be in top condition to tackle the dunes at night.
Our Extreme Uber Driver / Numbering off cars: We affectionately call our lead driver the "Extreme Uber Driver" as he expertly navigates the tricky terrain, ensuring everyone has a blast while keeping safety in check. Make sure your group knows protocol around numbering off your cars while in the dunes to passerby's. The first car holds a hand out with a finger up for each car coming behind them. Ex. 5 fingers if there are 5 cars in your group. The last car holds up a fist letting the other riders know there won't be any cars following them.
Riding in Style: The spectacle of lights is part of what makes night riding at Glamis so magical. Vehicles are not just functional; they're part of the show. With colorful whips and decked-out sand cars, our convoy becomes a moving light display, creating a dazzling effect against the dark desert backdrop.
Group Dynamics: Riding in groups is not only a safety measure but also amplifies the fun. The camaraderie of speeding through the dunes together, watching the lights from other groups, and just letting loose under the starry sky makes for an exhilarating experience.
Stargazing at Glamis
After the thrill ride to Oldsmobile Hill, taking a moment to simply gaze at the stars offers a perfect counterbalance to the evening's excitement. The vast open sky at Glamis is an ideal backdrop for stargazing, with clear views of the Milky Way and countless constellations. If you ride on a popular weekend like Camp RZR, or New Years- you'll likely get a firework show as well!
Wrapping Up
The dual experience of high-energy rides and peaceful stargazing defines our Glamis nights. Preparation, respect for the environment, and a spirit of adventure are key. As we switch from the high-octane excitement of riding with our 'Extreme Uber Driver' to the tranquil moments of looking up at the cosmos, each night at Glamis is a unique chapter in our off-roading tales. Remember, the desert at night is both beautiful and demanding, and respecting its conditions ensures that these night-time escapades remain a cherished part of our Glamis tradition.
